Solutions: Can simulation improve training? Many studies have been conducted during the past few years that prove the efficacy of simulation in medical education. The 2002 breakout VR to OR paper, co-authored by Anthony Gallagher, PhD, reported on the first study to prove that medical skills learned on a simulator do, in fact, transfer to the operating room. Recently, Dr. Gallagher teamed with SimQuest to conduct a series of additional studies to validate simulator efficacy. The findings showed that (1) simulation-based training improved performance with regard to IV catheter insertion and (2) existing medical/surgical curricula need to be modified to incorporate simulation-based training to its full potential.
